Stuttgart-based Lapp Group unveils initial prototypes compliant with the new VDE standard at the Hanover Fair
First complete charging system for electric cars
Stuttgart, April 2010
Recharging your electric car at an electric fuel station is a vision of the future. Well-known automotive manufacturers have been working on a Europe-wide standard to create a uniform charging system for these environmentally friendly vehicles for some time. The Stuttgart-based Lapp Group has now developed products that conform to this standard and unveiled the range in the form of initial prototypes at the Hanover Fair (hall 11, stand C03). These products can be used to recharge batteries in electric vehicles and comply with the new VDE standard in its current form.
"We are one of the first companies to develop a harmonised, complete and production-ready charging system with cables and connector", explains Werner Becker, CEO of Lapp Systems.
The innovative charging system was developed by the Lapp Group in conjunction with Bals Elektrotechnik GmbH from Germany's North-Rhine Westphalia. Bals Elektrotechnik, a company that has specialised in electrical connectors for the global market for more than 50 years, supplied the entire connector range including plug, coupler, flush-mounted socket and device plug for supplying the vehicle. The connector also features two special contacts that will be used in future to exchange data between the vehicle and the energy supply.
The connecting cable is supplied by Lapp and is called LFLEX CHARGE. The PUR helix cable is halogen-free and flame-retardant in accordance with IEC 60332.1-2. It is also oil-resistant and designed to withstand temperatures from -40 to +90C, making it ideal for use in tough environmental conditions. Becker explains: "This kind of cable must function reliably in all weathers. In addition, it shouldn't be possible to drag it inadvertently across the ground when recharging or be allowed to damage the vehicle. Along with the straight design, we offer customer-specific versions of the charging system, notably in special, flexible helix shapes."
The new charging system has enabled the Lapp Group to expand its expertise in the field of e-mobility. The motor-industry supplier Continental already uses special system connections from Lapp in series production of the hybrid store for the new Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHYBRID. These cables and connection systems are used inside the lithium-ion batteries. Lapp is also in discussions with well-known companies that are currently developing new battery systems with improved capacity for electrical energy.
To complete the portfolio, Lapp also produces special, patented high-voltage cabling for the new generation of vehicles. These high-voltage cables are used in the vehicle interior and can be customised using different connection technologies.
About the Lapp Group:
Lapp Systems is part of the Stuttgart-based Lapp Group and supplies customised cable and connecting systems, special helix cables, energy supply systems and special extruded and non-extruded applications all over the world. The Lapp Group is one of the most important manufacturers and suppliers of highly flexible cables, leads, cable accessories, industrial connectors and preassembled cables. Its world-famous brands include LFLEX connection and control cables, UNITRONIC data cables, HITRONIC fibre optic cables, SKINTOP screwed cable glands, SILVYN cable protection and guiding systems, FLEXIMARK marking systems, EPIC industrial connectors and ETHERLINE data transmission systems for ETHERNET technology.
